The National Confederation of Cooperatives (NATCCO) recently hosted an enlightening two-day event titled "Fundamentals of Cooperatives" for the employees of GEMPC. The virtual event, held on July 6th and 20th, 2024, via Zoom, aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of cooperatives, their origins, principles, and legal framework.

Exploring the Cooperative Landscape

The event delved into the core concepts of cooperatives, covering their history, unique identity, cultural significance, and the values and principles that guide their operations. The sessions also highlighted the key differences between cooperatives and other business models, providing attendees with a clear understanding of the cooperative advantage.

Legal Framework and Future Direction

The legal underpinnings of cooperatives were also explored, with a focus on the salient features of Republic Act 9520 (the Philippine Cooperative Code of 2008) and its Implementing Rules and Regulations. The role of the Cooperative Development Authority and the importance of cooperative bylaws were also discussed, providing attendees with a solid grasp of the regulatory environment.

The event concluded with an overview of the overall direction of cooperatives in the Philippines, their strategic plans, programs, and overarching purpose. This forward-looking perspective underscored the vital role cooperatives play in the country's economic and social development.

The event featured quizzes after each session to reinforce learning and ensure active participation. Dr. Mylene Dolores M. Gocon, a respected expert in the field, led the sessions, sharing her insights and knowledge with the 38 attendees from GEMPC.
